• Braxton Shelley, AM’16, is combining a doctorate and an MDiv, but the majority of the joint degrees in the Division of the Humanities are doctoral.
  • The first graduate to earn a joint degree in the Humanities was Victor A. Friedman, LAB’66, AM’71, PhD’75, in Linguistics and in Slavic Languages and Literatures. Friedman is the Andrew W. Mellon Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in Linguistics.
  • Friedman is one of 60 people to earn a joint degree in at least one humanities discipline at UChicago.
  • 14 joint degree holders combined linguistics and anthropology.
  • 34 combined linguistics and another subject area, including psychology, computer science, and topics in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.
  • Four of the joint degrees awarded since 2015—and all three awarded in 2016—included Cinema and Media Studies. Two were in CMS and East Asian Languages and Civilizations, one was in CMS and Slavic Languages and Literatures, and one was in CMS and Art History.
  • Graduate students in the Division’s newest joint degree program, in Theater and Performance Studies, will begin in Fall 2017.
